SPORTS AESTHETIC
With the Olympics on the horizon, it seemed fitting that many fashion designers looked to functional athleticism for Spring 2012 that can be worked in different styles. Look out for fabrics such as jersey, mesh, nylon and neoprene, along with detailing such as drawstring waists, zippers and hooded updates to give your wardrobe an on-trend athletic twist.
1950s
The 1950s look can be prim and proper with delicate florals and lace fabrics or given an eccentric twist through quirky patterns. Check the rails for longer length pencil skirts, flirty dresses with fitted bodices and bandeau tops with skirts.
TRIBAL GATHERING
Perennial safari looks are taken in an exotic tribal direction by the strong use of print either throughout the garment or in panel/trim detailing. Detailing comes to the fore with applique and embellishment for key statement pieces in your wardrobe.
UNDER THE SEA
Floaty, shimmering and glistening fabrics with undulating details and ruched fabrics all create an impression of ocean waves. Fabulous for party wear or wedding wear leading into the summer.
READY TO SHINE
From PVC to metallic threads, there are plenty of opportunities to add a shine to your wardrobe. Dresses and jackets were the key items that showcased this look on the catwalks, for everyday wear this has translated into jumpers and tunics on the high street.
1920s
The 1920s inspiration continues with us and can be seen in flapper-style fringing, slouchy trouser suits and drop waist dresses. Buy into the art deco prints or invest in embellished options for added value.
YELLOW & PASTELS
Yellow is the colour that cannot be ignored for SS12, while it is not always the easiest colour to wear especially for those with cool undertones in their skin colour, it is a great way to add some creativity and fun into your wardrobe. Pastels are also a strong colour trend and will best suit those with more muted colouring.
FLOWER POWER
Whether its traditional garden style or playful cartoon-like prints, there will be something for everyone here. The more directional prints will be on blouses and shirts to counteract the traditional influences and will be seen across both menswear and womenswear.
CUTS
The timeless pencil skirt will be making its own come back this year by cutting just below the knee , while the duster coat and the crop jacket come to the fore as the new must-have pieces of outerwear this season. Collarless jackets along with exaggerated proportions will be the most trend-led option.
DETAILING
Peplums are appearing everywhere currently courtesy of the 1950s trend, and appear either on the hem of skirts or jackets. Hi-lo hemlines have slowly been translating their way from the dresses on the catwalk into tunics and tops over the past season and this trend shows no sign of abating in the near future. Shoulder are also the body statement this year with the prominence of halter necks, one-shoulders and cut away detailing on tops.
